6 Secret Beach Holidays In Cornwall

When it comes to the UK’s most popular beaches, Cornwall is likely the first place that springs to mind. Places like Newquay, Lands’ End and the Lizard are home to some of the most visited beaches in the country. With over 400 beaches to explore, Cornwall boasts an unbeatable coastline with something to suit everyone.

If you’re looking for a more secluded beauty spot away from the crowds you have come to the right place. Here we have picked out 6 of our favourite secret beaches in Cornwall where you can explore untouched beauty without seeing another soul. Many of these beaches require a sturdy pair of walking boots and strong legs to clamber down cliffs to access the beach, but believe us when we say the trip will be worth it!

Lantic Bay

If there is one beach in Cornwall that deserves the name ‘hidden gem’ it’s Lantic bay!  Located on the quiet stretch of coast between Fowey and Polperro this sand and shingle sun trap is perfect for those looking for a secluded day at the beach. Embark on the 20 minute walk to the beach, meander through the woodland, farmland and steep steps and you’ll be rewarded with turquoise waters and a backdrop that could easily be mistaken for the Mediterranean.

Nanjizal Cove

The sandy little cove lays just south of Lands’ End. Also known as Mill Bay, this was once the site of a watermill, the ruins of which can still be explored. The stream now runs across the beach trickling into the sea. Nanjizal is known for its breathtaking rock formations, one of which being the impressive ‘Song of the Sea’, a beautiful rock arch that offers a whole new perspective of the views out to sea. Due to the hour walk from the nearest parking spot, Nanjizal cove remains one of Cornwall’s best kept secrets. This cove is a must visit if you’re looking for an untouched Cornish beach.

Porth Joke

Just a stone’s throw away from the extremely popular beaches in Newquay, Porth Joke (also known as Polly Joke) remains rarely busy! Just as lovely as any of its better known neighbouring beaches, Porth Joke stays a secret because the nearest car park is a 15 minute walk away. Rest assured, this attractive cove is well worth the walk! The unspoiled sandy beach is an oasis of calm, the golden beach is deeper than it is wide, hugged by a lush green valley.

Leggan Cove

Situated on the eastern side of the Lizard Peninsula, uniquely positioned between two quarries, Leggan cove is a sandy beach located just far enough from the nearest parking spots to never get busy! The beach is sheltered from the winds by the sloping cliffs making the beach perfect for sun worshipers. Be warned, the beach is only visible at low tide so keep an eye on your watch as you plan your visit.

Pentire Steps

Separated from its better known sister beach, Bedruthan Steps, Pentire steps is certainly off the beaten track and a little tricky to find. Only accessible via a scramble down the cliffs which pretty much guarantees the beach stays quiet throughout the year. The clear waters and memorising rock formations make this hidden gem a feast for the eyes.

Fox Cove

The undoubtedly beautiful Fox Cove is located near Padstow on the North Coast of Cornwall. The difficult to access rocky beach is easily recognisable by the long rock which divides the sea in half. The high cliffs provide the little beach with plenty of shelter from the wind, however, as with many of the secret beaches in Cornwall, access to Fox Cove is on the challenging side. At specific stages of the tide, you can witness the remains of a shipwrecked steam tanker peeking through the waves. Do check tide times before attempting the descent to the beach, the tide does quickly come in and the little cove will be engulfed.
